WORLD TB DAY 2023: YES WE CAN END TB

World TB Day is observed every year on March 24th to raise awareness about tuberculosis (TB) and the efforts being made to eliminate the disease.

This day commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of the bacterium that causes TB.

Dr. Robert Koch was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1905 for his discoveries related to the causative agents of tuberculosis and cholera.

The theme for the World TB Day 2023 is "Yes, We can end TB!"

Spinal tuberculosis, also known as Pott's disease, is a form of tuberculosis that affects the spine.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by germs that are spread from person to person through the air. TB usually affects the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body, such as the brain, the kidneys, or the spine.

In India, spinal tuberculosis is a significant public health concern, with an estimated 30-40% of all cases of tuberculosis affecting the spine.

This is due to a combination of factors, including poor living conditions, malnutrition, and a high prevalence of tuberculosis in the general population.

The symptoms of spinal tuberculosis can include back pain, stiffness, and difficulty moving, as well as fever, weight loss, and fatigue. In severe cases, the disease can cause paralysis, and if left untreated, can be fatal.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for a successful outcome, as delayed treatment can lead to permanent damage to the spine and nervous system.

Treatment for spinal tuberculosis typically involves a combination of antibiotics(ATT) and surgery, and can take several months or even years to complete.

Prevention of spinal tuberculosis includes measures such as improving living conditions, promoting good nutrition and hygiene, and increasing access to tuberculosis screening and treatment.

Education and awareness campaigns can also help to reduce the stigma surrounding tuberculosis and encourage people to seek treatment.
